إِلَيكَto you النزْرthe scant offering مِنfrom كَفِّthe hand of الأَسيرِthe captive
فانso if تقبلْyou accept تَكُنyou will be عينthe very embodiment of الشُكورthe truly grateful
To you, this scant offering from a captive's hand.
If you accept it, you will be gratitude itself.
تقبَّلaccept ماwhat يَذوبُhe melts لَهُbecause of it حَياءًwith shame
وَإِنand though عَذَرَتهُexcused him حالاتُthe circumstances of الفَقيرِthe poor man
Accept what makes him melt with shame,
though the poor man's circumstances excuse him.

أَلَيسَis not الخَسفُeclipse مُلتَزِمُbound to البُدورِthe full moons
And do not marvel at a calamity that humbled him:
does not eclipse attend the full moons?
وَرَجِّand hope for بِجَبرِهِby restoring him عُقبىthe recompense of نَداهُhis bounty
فَكَمfor how many جَبَرَتhave mended يَداهُhis hands مِنof كَسيرِa broken person

And hope, in restoring him, for his bounty's recompense:
how many a broken man his hands have mended!

And how many a lowly man his eminence raised;
and how many a prince his blades brought low.

And how many a favorite his approval made fortunate;
and how many a famous man his eminence made renowned.

And how many a pulpit longed for him—
its highest steps—and how many a throne!

For eyes of ill fortune have looked upon him,
and carried off, in him, a man beyond compare.

Ill fortunes that followed good fortunes:
thus revolve the decrees of the Almighty.
