Thus the sword perishes in its scabbard

When prolonged yearning shakes my hand.

Thus the spear thirsts; I have not couched it,

Nor has my right hand slaked it with gore.

Thus the steed is denied the champing of its bit,

Rising to seize an unguarded moment in ambush.

As though the horsemen within it were lions,

Watching their prey inside a lair.

Nor does nobility pity the Mashrafi blade

For the heart-vein's gloating that afflicts it.

Is there no generosity to revive the Samhari lance

And heal it of every hidden illness?

Is there no tenderness for the curved bow's son,

Intense in yearning, faint in groaning,

Hoping for an embrace from her breast

That would lodge him in a worthy ally's breast?
