لِلَّهِTo God! (expressing wonder) ماwhat خَلَدُthought; remembrance الأَمحاضِpure affections فيin خَلَديmy mind
لِمَنfor one who غَداhas become وَالنَدىand generosity كالروحِlike the soul وَالجَسَدِand the body
By God, what thoughts of pure affection dwell in my mind
For God what the vulture etched in my liver
For him who, with generosity, has become like soul and body—
For whom tomorrow and the dew are like the soul and body

The peerless Abu al-Jaysh, from whom my hand has won
The unique, my father of the army which my hands
The most precious treasure among humankind.
Victoriously seized from him the best souls among people
مُوَفِّقُguiding aright الرأيcounsel فيamid الراياتِthe banners لَذَّتُهُhis delight
فيin الجَدِّearnest striving وَالجودِand generosity لاnot فيin العَيشَةِthe life الرَغَدِof ease
He guides counsel aright amid the banners; his delight
The wise in opinion among the banners, his pleasure
Is in earnest striving and generosity, not in a life of ease.
Is in seriousness and generosity, not in an easy life
إِذاwhen رأتهُsees him العُلاhigh glory نادَتهُcalls to him مُفصِحَةًspeaking clearly
ياO قُرَّةَdelight العَينِthe eye بَلrather ياO فَلذَةَpiece الكَبِدِthe liver
When high glory sees him, it calls to him clearly:
When the highs see him, they call him eloquently
“O delight of the eye—nay, O piece of the liver!”
O delight of the eye! Nay, O piece of the liver
