لعَمرُكَBy your life إِنّيindeed I بِالمُدامَةِover wine قَوّالُa prolific speaker
وَإِنّيand indeed I لِماfor whatever يَهوىdesire النُدامىthe drinking companions لَفَعّالُsurely a ready doer
By your life, I have much to say of wine,
By your life, I am eloquent over wine,
And whatever the boon companions desire, I am sure to do.
And I readily do whatever the drinking companions desire.
وَإِنّيَand indeed I لِلخِلِّfor the friend الخَليلِthe intimate friend لَناعِشُsurely a sustainer
وَإِنّيَand indeed I لِلقَتلِfor killing المُناويthe opposing foe لَقَتّالُsurely a relentless slayer
I raise up the friend who is truly faithful,
And I surely sustain the close, dear friend,
And against the hostile adversary, I am a formidable fighter.
And in killing the opposing foe, I am a relentless slayer.
قَسَمتُI divided زَمانيmy time بَينَbetween كَدٍّtoil وَراحَةٍand rest
فَلِلرأيِso for counsel أَسحارٌpredawn hours وَلِلطّيبِand for fragrance آصالُlate afternoons
I have divided my time between toil and rest:
I have divided my time between toil and rest:
My predawn hours belong to counsel, my evenings to perfume.
So the predawn hours are for counsel, and the late afternoons for fragrance.
فَأُمسيso I spend the evening عَلىin اللَذاتِpleasures وَاللَهوِand amusement عاكِفاًabsorbed

By evening I devote myself to pleasures and diversion,
So I spend the evening absorbed in pleasures and amusement,
And by morning I strut through the precincts of leadership.
And in the morning I stride proudly through the courts of rule.
وَلَستُand I am not عَلىdespite الإِدمانِhabitual drinking أُغفِلُI neglect بُغيَتيmy aim
مِنَof المَجدِglory إِنّيindeed I فيin المَعاليlofty attainments لَمُحتالُsurely resourceful
Though constant indulgence does not make me lose sight of my aim—
And despite my habitual drinking, I do not neglect my quest
Glory—for I am resourceful in attaining the heights.
For glory; I am resourceful in pursuing lofty attainments.
إِذاwhen نامَslept أَقوامُgroups of people عَنشِunclear form; likely 'away from' المَجدِglory ضَلَّةًin folly
أُسَهِّرُI keep awake عَينيmy eye أَنlest تَنامَfall asleep بيfor me الحالُfortunes
When some men sleep, straying heedlessly from glory,
When people sleep, heedless of glory in their folly,
I keep my eye awake, lest Fortune sleep on me.
I keep my eye awake, lest my fortunes slumber.
وَإِنand if راقَcharmed أَقواماًsome people مِنَamong الناسthe people منطِقٌspeech
يرُقْcharms أَبَداًalways منيfrom me مَقالٌwords وَأَفعالُand deeds
If eloquence delights some among humankind,
And if speech charms some among the people,
My words and my deeds will always delight.
Both words and deeds from me will always charm.
