أَلَكُمis there for you إِلىto الصبّthe ardent lover الشَجيّthe grief-stricken مَعادُa return
فَتَفُكَّso may be loosened عَنهُfrom him لِلأسىof sorrow أَصفادُshackles
Will you return to the grief-stricken lover,
Is your tryst the early dawn, to free
so that sorrow’s shackles may be loosed from him?
My fettered grief and set it fleeing?
رَحَلَdeparted اِصطِباريmy patient endurance إِذwhen رَحَلتُمyou departed قائِلاًsaying
أوبُthe return الأَحِبَّةthe loved ones بَينَناbetween us الميعادُthe appointed time
My patience departed when you departed, saying:
When you left, endurance went from me;
“Our appointed meeting is when the loved ones return.”
Parting has sundered, dear ones, you and me.
ياO مَنthose whose ثَكِلتُI was bereft of دُنوَّهُمtheir nearness وَوِصالَهُمand union with them
فَبَداso appeared عَليَّupon me مِنَfrom الشُجوبgrief حِدادُmourning garb
O you whose nearness and union I have lost,
You left, and grief clothed me in mourning black.
so grief has clad me in mourning.
I yearned so sorely to be with you back.
كَمhow often بِتُّI spent the night مِنكُمamong you بَينَbetween غُصنَيtwo boughs of بانَةٍa bān tree

How often I spent the night among you, between two boughs of a bān tree,
Midst the Ban’s boughs I lay, and yearned again,
like a sword whose flat the scabbards press.
Like swords enclosed in sheaths that cause them pain.
