    وَأَكبادُكُم سودٌ وَأَعيُنُكُم زُرقُ

    Your faces are blotched, and your mouths are foes;

    And your livers are black, and your eyes are blue.

    And I have no strength for travel, nor for journeying by night,

    For I am blind; the roads do not light up for me.

    Did your coal-black ravens take flight at midmorning,

    As favorable omens, or did your gray doves pass by?

    وَما أَوبَتي إِلّا السَفاهَةُ وَالخُرقُ

    I journeyed, yet won neither worldly fortune nor faith;

    And my return was nothing but folly and ineptitude.

    Whenever one is sincere in devotion to his Lord, undiminished are

    His gifts to one who prays facing east.

    وَيُفزِعُهُ رَعدٌ وَيُطمِعُهُ بَرقُ

    I see the earth's creatures dreading their death;

    And thunder frightens them, and lightning gives them hope.

    So, O bird, trust me; and O gazelle, do not fear

    Harm from me, for there is no difference between me and you two.
