أَمسىhas become خَليلُكَyour close friend عِندَin the eyes of اللُبِّreason مُحتَقَراًdespised
وَلَيسَand is not فيamong المَلَإِthe assembled company الغاديgoing forth in the morning بِمُحَتَقرِat all despised
Your close friend has become contemptible in reason's eyes,
At eve my friend was scorned among the tipplers,
yet he is not despised among the company that goes forth in the morning.
Yet none is scorned within that jovial train.
تَخالُyou imagine نَورَblossoms الأَقاحيthe daisies فيamong عَوارِضِهِhis side teeth

You imagine daisy blossoms among his side teeth,
He seemed illumined by his flashing goblet,
as a cup of melted red anemones is brought near to him.
Brought often to him brimmed with limpid wine.
إِنif يُعطَهاhe is given it وَهُوَwhile he is رَضوىRadwa فيwithin زُجاجَتِهhis glass vessel

If he is given it, though he is Radwa within his glass,
If it is given him while the wine enchants him,
he loses sound judgment: he neither shows restraint nor keeps still.
He lacks all sense, neither resigned nor calm.
كَمhow many a سَيِّدٍlord جَعَلَتهُhas made him الراحُwine مِنone of خُرُقٍthe fools
وَكانَand he was كَالهَضبِlike the crags مِنof ثَهلانَThahlan أَوor أُقُرِUqur
How many a lord has wine turned into a fool,
How many a lord has fortune's change reduced
though he was like the crags of Thahlan or Uqur!
From highland chief to vagabond and beggar!
وَالراحُand wine تَجعَلُmakes مُرَّthe bitterness of العَيشِlife عِندَهُمُin their eyes
حُلواًsweet وَقَدthough it has ذَكَّرَتهُمreminded them of أَوَّلَthe beginning of المَقِرِbitter aloes
And wine makes life's bitterness, in their eyes,
Fortune has made the bitter taste of life
sweet, though it has recalled to them the first taste of bitter aloes.
Seem sweet to them; reminder of the grave
تَخالَسواthey snatched لَذَّةًa pleasure مِنهاfrom it مُعَجَّلَةًimmediate
وَلَمand did not يُبالواcare بِماabout what يَلقَونَthey would encounter مِنof سَقَرِSaqar (Hell)
They snatched an immediate pleasure from it,
They shunned. A fleeting pleasure was their quest.
and cared nothing for what they would suffer in Saqar.
Reckless if flames of hell should be their share.
وَأَغنَتِand it enriched الشَربَthe drinkers إِلّاexcept مِنin respect of جَميلِfine نُهىًunderstanding
مَنwhoever يَفتَقِرis in want مِنهُof it يوجَدis found to be شَرَّthe worst مُفتَقَرِone in need
And it enriched the drinkers in everything but fine understanding;
Wine would suffice them — but for craving more —
whoever lacks it is found the worst of paupers.
He who must crave shall find but misery.
