عَمَلٌwork كَلاlike no عَمَلٍwork وَوَقتٌand time فائِتٌpassing away
وَيَدٌand a hand إِذاwhen مَلَكَتit possesses رَمَتit casts away ماتَملِكُwhat it possesses
Work as though no work, and time slipping away;
Work is no longer work, and time has passed,
And a hand that, when it owns, casts away what it owns.
When a hand possesses, it casts away what it owns,
وَشُخوصُand figures أَقوامٍof peoples تَلوحُappear فَأَمَّةٌso one community
قَدِمَتhas arrived مِجَدَّدَةًanew وَأُخرىand another تَهلِكُperishes
And the figures of peoples appear: one community
People come and go, one nation perishes,
Has arrived anew, while another perishes.
While another is renewed and reborn,
أَمّاas for الجُسومُthe bodies فَلِلتُرابِso to the dust مَآلُهاtheir destination
وَعَيَيتُand I am baffled بِالأَرواحِconcerning souls أَنىwhere to تَسلُكُthey go
As for bodies, their destination is the dust;
Bodies return to dust, that is their fate,
And I am baffled by souls: where do they go?
But spirits - who knows where they roam and walk?
