وَالمالُand wealth خِدنُthe intimate companion of النَفسِthe soul غَيرَwithout مُدافِعٍany challenger
وَالفَقرُand poverty مَوتٌdeath جاءَcame بِالإِهمالِthrough neglect
And wealth is the soul's companion, with none to dispute it;
Wealth is the soul's seducer, no defender
And poverty is death brought on by neglect.
And poverty brings death through neglect
أَوَماand do you not تَرىsee حُكمَthe judgment of النُجومِthe stars مُصَوِّراًdepicting
بَيتَthe house of الحَياةِlife يَليهِfollows it بَيتُthe house of المالِwealth
And do you not see the judgment of the stars depicting
Or have you not seen the wisdom in the stars' arrangement
The house of life, followed by the house of wealth?
The house of life preceding the house of wealth
وَمِنَand from الجِهاتِthe directions السِتِّthe six رَبّيmy Lord حائِطيmy protector
لاnot عَنfrom يَمينيmy right مَرَّةًat one time وَشِماليand my left
And from all six directions my Lord guards me,
From all six directions my Lord walls me in
Not sometimes from my right and sometimes from my left.
Not once to my right or left
أَرواحُناour spirits أُلفينَwere found كَالأَرواحِlike the winds فيin
خَيرٍgood وَشَرٍّand evil مِنamong صَباًan east wind وَشَمالِand a north wind
Our spirits were found to be like the winds in
Our souls paired like souls
Good and evil, be they east winds or north winds.
In good and evil since youth and old age
وَالمَرءُand man كانَwas; existed وَمِثلَand like كانَthe verb 'was' وَجَدتُهُI found him
حالَيهِhis two states فيin الإِلغاءِbeing inoperative وَالإِعمالِand being operative
And man was; I found him like the verb 'was',
A man was and will be as I found him
In his two states: inoperative and operative.
In both abolishment and enactment
ثَمِلَgrew drunk الأَنامُhumankind مِنَfrom الضَلالَةِerror وَاِنتَشَواand became tipsy
بِالخَمرِwith wine فَاِعجَبso marvel مِنat ثِمالِthe drunkenness of ثُمالِthe drunken
Humankind grew drunk on error and became tipsy
The people grew heavy with misguidance and roamed astray
With wine; marvel, then, at the drunkenness of the drunken.
Drunk on wine, so wondrous the plenty of plenty
قَومٌa people تَغَنَّواthey sang مُرمِلينَdestitute مِنَof الهُدىguidance
فَتَضاعَفَso doubled الإِرمالُdestitution بِالإِرمالِby destitution
A people sang, destitute of guidance;
A people who sang muddled, straying from guidance
So destitution was doubled by destitution.
So piles doubled with piles
وَهُمُand they البِهامُthe young beasts قَصيرَةٌshort أَعمارُهُمtheir lives

And they are young beasts, their lives are short,
They are the confused, their lives short
Yet they cherish the longest hopes.
Yet hope for the longest hopes

You have met only an ignoramus feigning intelligence,
You would not meet any but an ignorant rationalist
Adorning himself among them without beauty.
Adorned by them without beauty
مِثلَlike البَهائِمِthe beasts أُبهِمَتwere kept ignorant عَنof رُشدِهاtheir right course
إِلاexcept اِحتِمالَbearing ثَقائِلِthe heavy weights of الأَحمالِloads
Like beasts, kept ignorant of their right course,
Like beasts made blind to their guidance
Except for bearing burdensome loads.
Bearing only heavy burdens

Your world is provision, calling to mind what follows it:
Your world is sustenance that later reminds
Further provision, attained through righteous deeds.
Of other sustenance got by righteous deeds
