Will you ever say, with an intention
sincere in your soul, O obstinate one, 'Desist!'

Has your time driven you from your piety with all its might?
Then hasten before it is too late—hasten!

Has your Lord fashioned you upon the back of a mount
that journeyed to reach the hour of being made to kneel?

Am I, then, trusting Time with a crop ripe for harvest,
on which the signs of ripeness have appeared?

And the despoiler of rights stripped you bare, so you did not stand
for what is right until after a long struggle.

Death concealed you, O hearing, so you could not discern
the doves' cooing amid asjal and arāk trees.

I have become one of life's inhabitants, and inevitable
is my stillness one day, after long movement.

And the birds seek their livelihood, setting out in the morning,
upon the earth, which is full of snares.
