    Whoever taunts a man over horses has lost his wits.

    Does a mother bear anything but bereavement and the loss of children?

    A traveling party floats in the deep sea, riding ships,

    while a night traveler rides camels, leading horses alongside.

    وَالسَعدُ غَيمٌ إِذا طَلَّ الفَتى وَبَلا

    It is only an allotted share that you cannot exceed;

    and good fortune is a cloud: when it sprinkles a man, it pours.

    You seek wealth: it is granted to you and withheld from you.

    And every heart was fashioned to love riches.

    If your passionate love for this world had a bodily form,

    and you revealed it, you would fill the plain and the mountain.

    Will you accept counsel from me, or disregard it?

    And many a man like you has discarded it and not accepted it.

    Whoever takes guidance from anything but reason is brought

    by his nightly guide to water that has so often brought ruin.

    A snare—the gazelle has no hope of escaping

    from it—and how could it, when the lion of al-Shara is ensnared?

    Do not grow fat; be a fierce lion in a lions' haunt.

    For sound judgment is at odds with the corpulent, fleshy man.

    Better, by my life, and a surer guide than their leader

    is a blind man's staff, which guided him along the paths when he set out.

    وَسَوفَ يُبكِرُ جانٍ يَطلُبُ العَبَلا

    Trees not deprived of water have put forth foliage;

    and soon a gatherer will come early, seeking the leaves.

    ما أَيبَسَ الغُصنُ إِلّا بَعدَما ذَبُلا

    Middle age, then an age resembling it;

    a branch grows dry only after it has wilted.

    The old man, having endured harm and affliction,

    wishes he could return to life's freshness, in youth's prime.

    to attack him; let him prepare arrows and stones.

    People have sought solace even in wishes; and aloft has risen

    the man of Ghawr, sending kisses to the woman of Najd.

    I see the two roads, of the dead and of the newborn,

    never empty—both their courses are well-trodden paths.

    فَالحَزمُ يُنزِلُكَ الأَخيافَ وَالقُبُلا

    So do not pitch tents in the torrent's channel;

    for prudence lodges you on higher slopes and rising ground.

    Decay is the body's lot; being a clamorous man's companion is a trial:

    if you say 'No' when some matter arises, he says 'Yes'.
