يَكونُis الَّذيthe one who سَمّىnamed مِنَfrom among القَومِthe people خالِداًKhalid (‘immortal’)
كَذوباًa liar لِأَنَّbecause المَرءَa person لَيسَis not بِخالِدِimmortal
Whoever named someone among the people Khalid
He who is named among the people as eternal
is a liar, for a human being is not immortal.
Is a liar, for no man lives forever
يُجالِدُfights مَحرومٌa deprived man عَلىfor الأَمرِthe matter فاتَهُeluded him
وَأَحرَزَهُand gained it بِالحَظِّthrough luck مَنone who لَمdid not يُجالِدِfight
A deprived man fights for what has eluded him,
A deprived man struggles for what has passed him by
while one who did not fight has gained it through luck.
While one with good fortune gains it without struggle
أَرىI see كُلَّevery مَولودٍperson born يُناسِبُis kin to والِداًa father
وَماbut not كُلَّevery مَولودِperson born الأَنامِhumankind بِوالِدِa father
I see every person born is kin to a father,
I see every newborn resembling its parent
but not everyone born among humankind is a father.
Yet not every newborn of mankind has a parent
وَيَجريand runs its course قَضاءٌa decree ماnot لَكُمfor you عَنهُagainst it حاجِزٌa barrier
فَأَلقواso surrender إِلىto مَولاكُمُyour Lord بِالمَقالِدِthe keys
And fate runs its course; you have no barrier against it,
And fate's decree comes to pass despite your barriers
so surrender the keys to your Lord.
So resign yourselves to your Master with obedience
