Whoever keeps company with a backbiter is himself a backbiter.

I am not one to reproach every wrong.

Nor do I punish an offender if he repents.

And how can I undertake an oft-repeated round of worship,

Crossing its pitch-darkness and journeying through it,

While entrails shrink above the camel-saddles,

And a she-camel with a steady trot jolts me,

Tracing on the earth the scribes' lines?

I am indeed doubtful of my own piety,

But I do not doubt death, which comes calling.
