أَينَ عَمرٌ لَمّا دَعا أُمَّ عَمرٍ

أَينَ عَمرٌ لَمّا دَعا أُمَّ عَمرٍ

وَلَدَيها مِنَ المُدامَةِ صَحنُ

وَلَدَيها مِنَ المُدامَةِ صَحنُ

Where is Amr, when he called to Umm Amr,

Where is the life when Umm Amr was called

while she had a bowl of wine?

And her son was there with a bowl of wine

بِئسَتِ الأُمُّ لِلأَنامِ هِيَ الدُن

بِئسَتِ الأُمُّ لِلأَنامِ هِيَ الدُن

يا وَبِئسَ البَنونَ لِلأُمِّ نَحنُ

يا وَبِئسَ البَنونَ لِلأُمِّ نَحنُ

What a wretched mother she is to humankind—the

How miserable is a mother for people, she is lowly

world! And what wretched sons we are to our mother!

Oh how wretched are sons to a mother, we are

كُلُّنا لا يَبُرُّها بِمَقالٍ

كُلُّنا لا يَبُرُّها بِمَقالٍ

فَاِعذُروها إِذ لَيسَ بِالفِعلِ تَحنو

فَاِعذُروها إِذ لَيسَ بِالفِعلِ تَحنو

None of us honors her in word,

All of us do not comfort her with words

so excuse her, since she shows no tenderness in deed.

So forgive her, for it is not with deeds that one shows affection

فَسَدَ الأَمرُ كُلُّهُ فَاِترُكوا الإِع

فَسَدَ الأَمرُ كُلُّهُ فَاِترُكوا الإِع

رابَ إِنَّ الفَصاحَةَ اليَومَ لَحنُ

رابَ إِنَّ الفَصاحَةَ اليَومَ لَحنُ

Everything has gone awry; abandon grammatical

The matter is ruined, leave off grammatical correctness

inflection: eloquence today is faulty speech.

For eloquence today is error
