Whenever a breath passes, think of it

As a thread from life's threadbare garment.

And if time provokes you, be patient with it,

And live with dignity, as though you had not been provoked.

For many an ember has died down and gone out,

Though it had a glow some time ago.

    في غَيرِ حَظِّكَ يَعلو الرَهَج

    So, commander of the army, ease up;

The dust rises, but not to your advantage.

Time, which bestowed scant bounty on you,

Has never ceased taking lives in great numbers.

So do not destroy our lives; enough for us

Is fate, intent on doing us harm.

Help a weeper who persists in his grief,

And ask the laughing one among the people what brought him joy.

And our world, at its end, is like a child

    Told at the outset, 'Spell!'
