إِذاwhen حَضَرَتcomes عِنديto me الجَماعَةُthe company أَوحَشَتmakes me feel lonely
فَماfor ... is nothing وَحدَتيmy solitude إِلّاbut صَحيفَةُa page إيناسيmy solace
When company comes to me, it leaves me lonely;
For my solitude is but the page of my solace.
طَهارَةُthe purity of مِثليone like me فيin التَباعُدِkeeping distant عَنكُمُfrom you
وَقُربُكُمُand your nearness يَجنيyields هُموميmy worries وَأَدناسيand my stains
The purity of one like me lies in keeping far from you;
And your nearness yields my worries and my stains.
وَأَلقىand gave إِلَيَّto me اللُبَّreason عَهداًa covenant حَفِظتُهُI remembered it
وَخالَفتُهُand I violated it غَيرَnot being المَلولِone easily bored وَلاnor الناسيone who forgets
And reason gave me a covenant that I remembered;
Yet I violated it, neither bored nor forgetful.
وَأَعجَبُand I marvel مِنّيat myself كَيفَhow أُخطِئُI err دائِماًalways
عَلىdespite أَنَّنيthat I am مَنamong أَعرَفِthe most knowledgeable الناسِpeople بِالناسِabout people
And I marvel at myself: how do I always err,
Though I am among those who know people best?
نَصَحتُكِI counseled you ياO أُمَّmother of البَناتِdaughters فَحاذِريso beware
وَساوِسَwhisperings وَلّاجِone who keeps entering الأَساوِدِblack serpents خَنّاسِone who slinks away
I have counseled you, O mother of daughters, so beware
The whispers of the slinking one who enters black serpents.
وَلاand do not تُلبِسيdress in الحِجلَينِthe two anklets بِنتَكِyour daughter وَالبُرىand the bracelets
لِتَشهَدَso she may attend عُرساًa wedding وَاِشغِلَنهاand do keep her occupied بِعِرناسِwith a weaver's rod
And do not adorn your daughter with the two anklets and bracelets
To attend a wedding; instead, keep her busy with a weaver's rod.
