أَيُّwhat صَفاةٍhard rock لاnot يُرىis seen دَهرَهاits time
أَيُّ صَفاةٍ لا يُرى دَهرَها
يُجيدُexcels at فيin مُدَّتِهِits span نَحتَهاcarving it
يُجيدُ في مُدَّتِهِ نَحتَها
What rock is there whose Time is not seen
What polished rocks unseen for ages
Skillfully carving it throughout its span?
Were carved by slow endeavor through the ages
كانواthey were زَماناًfor a time فَوقَabove غَبرائِهِمtheir dusty earth
كانوا زَماناً فَوقَ غَبرائِهِم
ثُمَّthen اِستَحالواthey were transformed فَغَدَواand so they became تَحتَهاbeneath it
ثُمَّ اِستَحالوا فَغَدَوا تَحتَها
For a time they were above their dusty earth,
Once high above the dust that hid them all
Then they were transformed and came to be beneath it.
Now under earth has claimed them in its thrall
أَودَعَهُمHe lodged them رَبُّهُمtheir Lord سِرَّهاits hidden depths
أَودَعَهُم رَبُّهُم سِرَّها
مِنfrom بَعدِafter ماthat أَطعَمَهُمHe fed them سُحَتهاits unlawful sustenance
مِن بَعدِ ما أَطعَمَهُم سُحَتها
Their Lord lodged them in its hidden depths,
Their Maker laid them in earth's secret places
After feeding them its unlawful sustenance.
When they had served as food to feed death's faces
