أَمّاas for اليَقينُcertainty فَإِنَّناthen indeed we سَكنُdwellers البِلىdecay
أَمّا اليَقينُ فَإِنَّنا سَكنُ البِلى
وَلَناand we have هُناكَthere جَماعَةٌa company فُرّاطُthose who went before
وَلَنا هُناكَ جَماعَةٌ فُرّاطُ
What is certain is that we are dwellers in decay;
And there we have a company that has gone before us.
وَلِكُلِّand for every دَهرٍage حَليَّةٌan ornament مِنfrom أَهلِهِits people
وَلِكُلِّ دَهرٍ حَليَّةٌ مِن أَهلِهِ
ماnot فيهِمُamong them جَنَفٌinjustice وَلاnor إِفراطُexcess
ما فيهِمُ جَنَفٌ وَلا إِفراطُ
And every age has an ornament from among its people,
In whom there is neither injustice nor excess.
وَالغيدُand the graceful women مُختَلِفٌdiffering مَواضِعُplaces حَليهاtheir jewelry
وَالغيدُ مُختَلِفٌ مَواضِعُ حَليها
وَتَناءَتِand lie far apart الأَحجالُthe anklets وَالأَقراطُand the earrings
وَتَناءَتِ الأَحجالُ وَالأَقراطُ
And the graceful women's jewelry lies in different places,
And far apart lie the anklets and the earrings.
كَمhow often لاحَتِshone الأَشراطُthe Ashrāṭ stars فيin جِنحِgloom الدُجىnight's darkness
كَم لاحَتِ الأَشراطُ في جِنحِ الدُجى
فَمَتّىso when تَبينُwill appear لِبَعثِناfor our resurrection أَشراطُsigns
فَمَتّى تَبينُ لِبَعثِنا أَشراطُ
How often the Ashrāṭ stars have shone in night's gloom!
So when will signs of our resurrection appear?
وَكَأَنَّand as though هَذاthis الخَلقَhumankind أَهلُinhabitants جَهَنَّمHell
وَكَأَنَّ هَذا الخَلقَ أَهلُ جَهَنَّم
وَلَهُمand for them مِنَof المَوتِdeath الزُؤامِswift and dreadful سِراطُa path
وَلَهُم مِنَ المَوتِ الزُؤامِ سِراطُ
And it is as though these people were the inhabitants of Hell,
And theirs is a path of swift, dreadful death.
لَوif لَمnot تَكُنyou were مِثلَlike الجَماعَةِthe multitude زائِفاًcounterfeit
لَو لَم تَكُن مِثلَ الجَماعَةِ زائِفاً
لَمnot يَشجُكَgrieve you الدينارُthe dinar وَالقيراطُand the qirāṭ (a small monetary unit)
لَم يَشجُكَ الدينارُ وَالقيراطُ
Had you not been counterfeit, like the multitude,
The dinar and the qirāṭ would not have grieved you.
