We were given a whiff of Lubnā, so we called her Lubaynā,

after she resolved to shun us and depart.

She met us with her affection, but we disliked

it; she returned for a visit, but we refused.

We have left Umm Dafr—Mother Stench—to her people,

and sat apart from her affairs, clasping our knees.

And the vicissitudes of the days scattered what is gathered

by a young man in his pools—and what we gathered.

    وَكَم شُقنَ زاهِداً وَاِطَّبينا

    We ask God that we be delivered from them;

and many an ascetic have they made yearn; we too were lured.

We were not wine-drinkers who bought

it, nor men of power who took captives.

Do not live as a determinist or a Qadarite,

and strive for a middle course between the two.
