Ugh, at the hardship we are in!

For we are all caught in scheming and deceit.

What are grammar, poetry, and theology—and what

are Muraqqish and al-Musayyab ibn ʿAlas?

The sleepless man's darkness has dragged on,

and dawn is distant—who, then, will bring us food?

The mantle-clad are like wolves, even if

they meet you clad in white; among the grazing flocks is grayness.

    فَإِن أَتَتني حَلاوَةٌ فَبَلَس

    Lentils prepared for me suffice me;

and if sweetness comes to me, then figs.

So eat what you choose: surely more restful than

Qarun's wealth are self-restraint and poverty.

The young man draws near to you for his need,

until, once he obtains what he wanted, he slips away.

A thread in the ear brings no adornment,

yet how often suppleness has graced the hands.

Do not be a burden on your companion among the

company—for many an eater took seconds and regurgitated.

If you are deceitful, then keep far away; nor

are those who wronged and deceived hidden from people.

And if you are granted wisdom, then you are for the

companions a jewel you all vie for in furtive snatches.

    فَما يُبالي الكَريمُ أَينَ جَلَس

    And sit where you have arrived, settling down;

for the noble man does not care where he sits.
