Two mountains said, "Our two young ibexes have slipped."

So we ask the Creator for forgiveness.

The One cured us of our sickness,

and the King mended us and fitted us with nose-rings.

God made us aware of a matter, yet we do not

    wash away stains through repentance.

    Ignorance emboldened us to sin,

and it sent us running toward doing good.

And oppression goaded us on, so you found us,

and every one of us is found insolent.

Indeed, I am alive; my sin has cast a film over

my heart, so I never cease to be bewildered.

Parched with summer heat and worry—who, then,

    will become a door-pivot at a mosque?

If our two full moons perish, then we hope in Him who

bestowed wealth, and we do not petition Badran.

Two traces—of good and evil—are ours,

and reproach overtakes the richest of us.

Two lifetimes have passed for an elder, and no

habitation is left for the destroyer.

So God's mercy be upon a community

I once knew on earth as neighbors.

Sleep conveyed their greetings to us,

and how many peers death has destroyed!

Two kinds of jealousy—for praise and for chastity—

are better for whoever is found jealous.

We neglect our captives in the hands of death,

and tonight our swiftest night-traveler sets out.

Two luminaries shone for us in darkness,

and in it we have indeed glimpsed fires.

If man used his reason, he would seek guidance

and would not spend the night heedless in sleep.

Life and death are two bitter things; so

carrying ashwood spears has availed him nothing.
