أَمَرَّتturned bitter هَذِهِthis الدُنياworld وَمَرَّتand passed away
وَإِمراراًand embittering أُؤَنِّبُI reproach لاnot مُروراpassing
This world turned bitter and passed away;
This world has passed by and gone
And I reproach its bitterness, not its passing.
Yet passing I still mourn, not moving on
وَأَغراناand enticed us بِهاwith it طَبعٌa nature لَئيمٌbase
وَأَعطَتand it gave مِنfrom حَبائِلِهاits snares غُروراdelusion
And a base nature enticed us to it,
A wicked nature makes us keen
And from its snares it offered delusion.
On its deceptions, binding unseen
قَرَتكَit hosted you مِنَof القِرىhospitality وَقَرَتand served بِهُلكٍwith destruction
وَأَقرَتand loaded عِبأَهاits burden وَقَرَتand gathered شُروراevils
It offered you hospitality, and served you destruction;
It settled you in settlements and towns
And laid its burden upon you, and gathered evils.
And settled its heft, and settled harms
أَيَلبَثُwill there remain? ليfor me فَأَذكُرَهُso I may remember it زَمانٌa time
فَإِنّيfor indeed I خِلتُهُthought it نَسِيَhad forgotten السُروراjoy
Will any time linger for me, that I may remember it?
Will time remain for me to reminisce?
For I thought it had forgotten joy.
For I have left it, forgetting joyfulness
