They recite their scriptures, while truth tells me

that the last of them is falsehood, and so is the first.

You have spoken truly, O Reason; so let the fool be banished,

who fashioned false accounts or interpreted them.

Nor is a religious scholar exceptional among his fellows

if he seeks gain through reports he has fabricated.

And he sought only women whom he married

through what he fabricated, and wealth he acquired.

Suffering is long for a person living among peoples

who take their errant one's fabrication as their mainstay.

And a restless wanderer will sleep in the dusty earth,

who has traversed his world's horizons and roamed them.

    بَل شيمَةٌ حَمَّها قَدرٌ وَسَوَّلَها

    I shall surely forsake you, not out of any prior hatred;

rather, it is a disposition that fate ordained and made appealing.

    صَلّى إِلَيها زَماناً ثُمَّ حَوَّلَها

    And the lawgiver had Jerusalem as his direction of prayer;

he prayed toward it for a time, then changed it.

Let no preacher standing in an assembly deceive you

with a sermon whose meaning he embellished and which he prolonged.

For admonitions, though they inspire awe, are nothing but stratagems

from a speaker who contrived them against people.

And time makes the armored warrior forget his sharp sword

and his armor, and the tribe's maiden forget her tunic.

And it reclaims from the soul that attained honor

what it had bestowed upon her in days gone by.

And Jirwal became dust after his speech,

and he did not resemble the desert's stones.

Spend your time with grace, easing the course

of affairs; behind the soul lies its dagger.

And as for water, a draught carried along suffices you

in the caravan, if the earth denies you its stream.
