They combined an umrah with Hajj, and served us
He combined pilgrimage with 'umrah, and paired us
Love’s torment—ah, for those hosts who join the rites!
With passion - so sighs burst from singing doves.

Noblewomen of beardless youths, atop sleek, grim-faced steeds—
Snorting she-camels above smooth-skinned young ones
Fiery steeds, their riders exulting in destruction.
With howdahs that sway with the swaying of howdahs.

The spear-shafts drew for them the milk of their lives;
Their camel-drivers saw the messages of their lives
So marvel at milk from supple, milk-drawing shafts!
So delight in messages from swaying, singing camels.
إِذاif لَمnot يَزُمَّreins in النَفسَthe soul لِبٌّreason وَلاnor تُقىًpiety

فَرُبَّ عَوارٍ لِلأُنوفِ عَوارِنِ
If neither reason nor piety reins in the soul,
When the soul is not restrained by shame or decency
Then many a blemish befalls hard noses.
Many a howdah sways the noses of the howdahs.
وَكَمand how many مِنa حُسامٍkeen sword قَدhas indeed أُميطَbeen removed بِهِwith it الأَذىthe harm

And how many a keen sword has been used to remove harm,
And many a sword with which harm was averted
And many a supple brown shaft holds humiliation for a nose-tip!
And spears whose blades pierce those who pierce.
