قَدalready عَلِمواthey knew أَنthat سَيُخطَفَwill be snatched away الشَبَحُthe body
فَاِغتَبَقواso they drank in the evening بِالمُدامِwith wine وَاِصطَبَحواand they drank in the morning
They already knew that the body would be snatched away,
They knew the phantom would soon disappear
so they drank wine in the evening and in the morning.
So they indulged in wine and woke up sober
ماnot حَفِظواthey protected جارَةًa female neighbor وَلاnor فَعَلواthey did
خَيراًgood وَلاnor فيin مَكارِمٍnoble deeds رَبِحواthey gained
They protected no female neighbor, nor did they do
They preserved no neighbor and did no good
any good, nor did they gain through noble deeds.
Nor profited in noble deeds a bit
غالواthey spent extravagantly بِأَثوابِهِمon their garments فَماyet not حَسُنواthey became handsome
فيin ذَهَبيَّgolden اللِباسِthe clothing بَلrather قُبِحواthey became ugly
They spent extravagantly on their robes, yet were not handsome
They donned their clothes in vain, no elegance gained
in golden clothing; rather, they grew ugly.
In their golden robes they looked hideous instead
دَعواthey called إِلىto اللَهِGod كَيso that يُجيبَهُمُHe might answer them
سِيّانِalike هُمthey وَالخَواسِئُand the outcast ones النُبُحُthe barking ones
They called upon God so that He might answer them;
They called on God, hoping He'd answer them
they and the outcast barking dogs are alike.
Wicked they were, and rogues of little worth
كَمhow many قَتَلواthey killed عاتِقاًaged wine وَكَمand how many جَرَحواthey wounded
دَنّاًa wine-jar وَكَمand how many فارَmusk-pods تاجِرٍa merchant’s ذَبَحواthey slaughtered
How much aged wine they slew, and how often they wounded
How many a neck they severed, how many they maimed
a wine-jar; how many a merchant’s musk-pod they slaughtered!
How many a merchant did they ambush and kill
لاdo not تَغبِطِenvy القَومَthe people فيin ضَلالَتِهِمtheir error
وَإِنand even if رُؤواthey were seen فيin النَعيمِluxury قَدindeed سَبَحواthey swam
Do not envy those people in their error,
Do not envy people lost in misguidance
even if they are seen swimming in luxury.
Though they seem to revel in blessings and wealth
