    فَلَمّا اِنقَضَت أَيّامُهُ ذَهَبَ النُسكُ

    Their wayward man became devout for fear of their ruler;

    but when his days were over, religious devotion vanished.

    So now, after his clinging to piety,

    a wanton woman's perfume clung to his sleeves.

    And does applying musk help, when beneath the musk

    is a foul, vile man, and what lies above him is musk?

    If destitution grips you, be patient and do not be

    distraught, so that a young man may die with some strength still in him.
