داءُ هَذا الأَنامِ لا يَقبَلُ الطِبَّ

داءُ هَذا الأَنامِ لا يَقبَلُ الطِبَّ

وَقِدماً أَراهُ داءً نَجيسا

وَقِدماً أَراهُ داءً نَجيسا

The sickness of this humankind does not yield to medicine,

This era's malady rejects all remedy

And I have long deemed it an unclean disease.

And its foot, I see, is an impure disease

فِكَرٌ حَسَّنَت لِقَومٍ أُموراً

فِكَرٌ حَسَّنَت لِقَومٍ أُموراً

فَاِستَجازوا التَهويدَ وَالتَمجيسا

فَاِستَجازوا التَهويدَ وَالتَمجيسا

Ideas made certain things seem good to some people,

A thought that embellished for some folks affairs

So they deemed conversion to Judaism and Magianism permissible.

So they permitted vulgarity and vileness

مَعشَرٌ صَيَّروا المُدامَةَ قُربا

مَعشَرٌ صَيَّروا المُدامَةَ قُربا

ناً وَناسٌ أَلقوا بِها التَنجيسا

ناً وَناسٌ أَلقوا بِها التَنجيسا

A group made wine a sacrificial

A group who turned wine-cups into idols

offering, while others branded it impure.

And people who cast at it impurity

رُبَّ رَبعٍ كَأَنَّهُ النُجمُ في العِزِّ

رُبَّ رَبعٍ كَأَنَّهُ النُجمُ في العِزِّ

أَتاهُ رَيبُ الزَمانِ فَجيسا

أَتاهُ رَيبُ الزَمانِ فَجيسا

Many a dwelling, like the stars in its glory,

Many a stead as if it were a star in glory

was visited by time's vicissitudes and trampled down.

Came to it the doubt of time, so it was degraded

وَالفَتى غَيرُ آمِنٍ مِن أَذى الدَه

وَالفَتى غَيرُ آمِنٍ مِن أَذى الدَه

رِ وَلَو كانَ شَخصُهُ البِرجيسا

رِ وَلَو كانَ شَخصُهُ البِرجيسا

And a young man is not safe from the harm of

And the youth is not safe from time's injury

time, even if his person were Jupiter.

Even if his person were an armored fortress
