    فَعُد مِن رَهطِ أَقوامٍ فَراعينا

    The owner of the steed slaughtered a wild bull for his meal;

So count him among a band of Pharaohs.

Tell the lavish hosts whose guests disobey them

That those who stab become those who are obeyed.

And a man is praised among the diligent when he sets out early,

But he is never praised among fornicators.

And you never cease to meet, in darkness and in morning light,

Bearers of glad tidings with no glad news, and announcers of death.

And I have never found time's vicissitudes turning aside

From the devout who pray for God's sake.

The worst of women are those shared by all, who have become unrestrained,

Like the earth, bearing children shared by all.

And all is God's to command: how many a young man has perished and gone

Without a trace, leaving neglected children behind.

And life at its fullest passes like its shortest:

Seven years are like seventy, or nine like ninety.

And if you heeded the Lord of all people,

You would not be frightened by the world's calamities.
