The newborn is clothed in life’s new garment and wears it;
The newborn is clothed in fresh life, which he wears,
yet with every day the precious garment grows threadbare.
And every day the precious garment grows threadbare.

He remains in the cradle, unable even to sit,
He remains in the cradle, unable to sit up,
while his journey toward death is pledged to headlong haste.
Yet his journey toward death is bound to move swiftly.

The young man’s heart constricts unless he finds for himself
The young man's breast grows tight unless he finds for himself
some occupation—then he schemes for worldly life with endless tasks.
Some work; so he devises means for worldly life through occupations.
