The loss of sight in both my eyes has at times spared my body

from roaming the smooth, barren deserts,

though I pass the night keeping dusky sandgrouse company in a land

whose wastes are crossed by midday and predawn journeys.

I love life, yet this of its faults is enough for me:

that I live by dissimulation and deceit.

We demand noble men of Time, while it presents us

with two clear excuses: bankruptcy and impoverishment.

So conceal your speech; let no one learn of it,

from Gabriel's company or from Iblis's.

And I, like others, have learned through direct observation

that glory keeps company with men dauntless in battle.

And the day of Jayran, in its hideousness, blotted out

the glories of the noble and the days of al-Dayalis.
