The King is beyond verse and prose,

and beyond any report you recount from tradition.

And beside him this sun dwindles until

it becomes like a dinar of ʿAthr.

And how many people's dwellings have fallen into ruin,

though once crowded with people of clamor and wealth.

If you become rich through noble patience,

then you are wealthy, even if you have lost your money.

Many are those who grow arrogant over lofty attainments,

whether what they had was little or much.

I seek uprightness from the children of this world,

but the souls of fools refuse to respond.

And I prefer to protect them with all my effort,

yet how can I rouse them, with death at my heels?

In times of plenty I fear drought,

and in droughts I hope for a time of abundance.

And fate's bountiful water-drawer surges up,

when the waters meet in every well.

And even if I stumbled upon the Pleiades,

I would still be allied with my slips and stumbles.

And the people of rugged ground grieved, while those of level ground

found solace in having come to rest in soft, smooth soil.
