    The departure of the righteous all together is sorrow enough for you,

    And after them we remain dwellers on the earth.

    Indeed, Iraq and indeed the Levant have long

    Been empty: kingship has no power in either.

    في كُلِّ مِصرٍ مِنَ الوالينَ شَيطانُ

    Devils vested with power have ruled mankind;

    In every city, there is a devil among the governors,

    One who cares not if all the people go hungry,

    So long as he spends the night drinking wine, his belly full.

    Their natures have grown alike: the Roman's speech

    Is like the Arabs', and the man of Tayy speaks a foreign tongue.

    كَأَنَّ أَرماحَهُم في الحَربِ أَشطانُ

    As for Kilab, they are of more use than their foxes;

    Their spears in battle seem like well-ropes.

    When will an imam arise to exact redress for us,

    So that generations and lowlands may know justice?

    Pray wherever you wish, for the lands are foul,

    As though they were all resting grounds for camels beside water.
