عاقِبَةُthe final fate of المَيِّتِthe dead person مَحمودَةٌpraiseworthy
The dead person's fate is praiseworthy,
The end of the deceased is praiseworthy
if God spares him agonizing punishment.
When Allah spares the agony of punishment
لَيسَis not عَذابُthe punishment of اللَهِGod مَنwhoever خانَهُbetrayed Him
كَالقَطعِlike cutting off لِلأَيديthe hands وَضَربِand striking الرِقابthe necks
God's punishment of whoever betrays Him is not
The punishment of Allah is not like that for the betrayer
like cutting off hands and striking off heads.
Like cutting off hands and striking necks
لَكِنَّهُbut it مُتَّصِلٌunremitting فَاِحتَقِبso shoulder a burden
ماwhatever شِئتَyou wish لاnot يوضَعُis laid aside كَوَضعِlike laying aside الحِقابthe waist-girdle
But it is unremitting; so shoulder
Rather it is continuous so beware
whatever you wish: it cannot be laid aside like a girdle.
Whatever you wish will not be put down like a burden
وَنارُهُand His fire لاnot تُشبِهُresembles النارَfire فيin
إِفنائِهاits consuming ماwhat أُطعِمَتit is fed مِنof ثِقابkindling
And His fire is unlike earthly fire in
And His fire is not like the fires
consuming the kindling it is fed.
That consume what they are fed with fuel
كَمhow many a عَمَلٍdeed أَهمَلُهُneglected it عامِلٌa doer
يَحفَظُهُpreserves it خالِقُناour Creator بِاِرتِقابwith watchfulness
Many a deed its doer has neglected,
How many deeds have been neglected by a worker
yet our Creator preserves it with watchful care.
Our Creator preserves them in waiting
وَإِنَّماand only غودِرَwas left فيin مُدَّنيmy lifespan (probable intended reading)
كَقابِlike the span of قَوسٍa bow مُدَّdrawn أَوor بَعضِpart of قابa bow-span
And all that remains of my lifespan is
Indeed I sank in my fortresses
like a drawn bow's span, or part of a span.
Like an archer's bow stretched or part of a bow
لَيتيwould that I were هَباءٌfine dust فيin قَناتَيthe two nostrils of لَأيًa wild ox
أَوor قَطرَةُa drop بَينَbetween جَناحَيthe two wings of عُقابan eagle
Would that I were dust in a wild ox's two nostrils,
I wish I were vapor in my bones
or a drop between an eagle's wings,
Or a raindrop between an eagle's wings
أَوor كُنتُI were كُدرِيّاًa dusky sandgrouse أَخاa companion of قَفرَةٍa wasteland
مَشرَبُهُits drinking water مِنfrom آجِناتِstagnant waters of الوِقابthe rocky hollows
or that I were a dusky sandgrouse, companion of a wasteland,
Or that I were a muddy brother to a barren land
whose drink comes from stagnant pools in rocky hollows.
Whose drink is from the ooze of marshes
دُنياكَyour world وَرهاءُa foolish woman لَهاshe has شارَةٌfinery
وَقُبحُهاand her ugliness يُستَرُis concealed تَحتَbeneath النِقابthe face-veil
Your world is a foolish woman dressed in finery,
Your world is an illusion that has a tip
and her ugliness is hidden beneath the veil.
And its ugliness is hidden beneath the veil
ياO ناقَةًshe-camel فيin ضَرعِهاher udder قاتِلٌa killer
تُعِلُّهُdrink it repeatedly مُرتَضِعاتُsuckling ones among السِقابthe camel calves
O she-camel, in whose udder lurks a killer,
O she-camel with a killer in her udder
which suckling camel calves drink again and again!
Suckled by the young of lizards
هَلhas ...? وَأَلَتescaped مُغفِرَةٌa she-ibex with young بِالذُرىon the summits
أَوor أُفعُوانٌa great male serpent ساكِنٌdwelling بِالشَقابin the rocky clefts
Has a mother ibex on the summits escaped,
Has forgiveness descended on the grains of sand
or a great serpent dwelling in rocky clefts?
Or are snakes dwelling on the steep slopes?
آهٍalas لِضَعفيfor my weakness كَيفَhow بيwith me هابِطاًdescending
فيinto الوادِthe valley أَوor مُرتَقِياًascending فيin العِقابthe steep mountain passes
Alas for my weakness! How shall I fare, descending
Alas for my weakness whether descending
into the valley, or climbing the steep mountain passes?
Into the valley or climbing the steep cliffs
