الجُسمُthe body كَالصُفرِlike brass يَكسوهُcoats it الثَرىthe soil صَدأًwith rust
الجُسمُ كَالصُفرِ يَكسوهُ الثَرى صَدأً
وَالخَيرُand goodness كَالتِبرِlike raw gold لاnot يَدنوdraws near لَهُto it الدَنَسُimpurity
وَالخَيرُ كَالتِبرِ لا يَدنو لَهُ الدَنَسُ
The body is like brass: the soil coats it with rust.
The body is like zero, covered by earth, rust
And goodness is like raw gold: no impurity draws near it.
And goodness is like gold, untainted by filth
لَوif دامَremained فيin الأَرضِthe earth عُمرَthe lifetime of الدَهرِtime مُختَزِناًstored away
لَو دامَ في الأَرضِ عُمرَ الدَهرِ مُختَزِناً
لَماwould not تَغَيَّرَchange عَمّاfrom what يَعهَدُknows الأَنَسُhumankind
لَما تَغَيَّرَ عَمّا يَعهَدُ الأَنَسُ
Were it to remain stored in the earth for all eternity,
If it stayed on earth for eternity, stored away
It would not change from what humankind knows it to be.
It would not change from what is familiar to mankind
