حَديثُtalk فَواجِرٍwanton women وَشِرابُand drinking خَمرِwine
حَديثُ فَواجِرٍ وَشِرابُ خَمرِ
وَقَتلىand the slain يُطرَحونَare cast out لِأُمِّfor Umm (mother of) عَمرِʿAmr
وَقَتلى يُطرَحونَ لِأُمِّ عَمرِ
Talk of wanton women and the drinking of wine,
Talk of the wanton and wine's bitter draught,
And slain men cast out for Umm ʿAmr,
And slain men cast before a mother bereft.
وَمَهلِكُand the downfall دَولَةٍa state وَقِيامُand the rise أُخرىanother
وَمَهلِكُ دَولَةٍ وَقِيامُ أُخرى
كَذاكَthus الدَهرُtime أَمرٌan event بَعدَafter أَمرِan event
كَذاكَ الدَهرُ أَمرٌ بَعدَ أَمرِ
And the downfall of one state and the rise of another:
Thus kingdoms fall and others rise anew;
Such is time: one event after another.
So is the world - today one thing, tomorrow another.
وَمَوتٌand death لاnot تُؤَخَّرُis delayed عَنهُfrom it نَفسٌa soul
وَمَوتٌ لا تُؤَخَّرُ عَنهُ نَفسٌ
تُهَدَّدُis threatened بَعدَهُafter it بِصَلاءِwith scorching جَمرِembers
تُهَدَّدُ بَعدَهُ بِصَلاءِ جَمرِ
And death, from which no soul is granted a reprieve;
Death brooks no delay for any soul;
That soul is threatened afterward with the scorching of embers.
After it, souls are threatened with hellfire's blaze.
وَإِنَّand indeed الغَمرَal-Ghamr كانَthere were بِهِin it أُناسٌpeople
وَإِنَّ الغَمرَ كانَ بِهِ أُناسٌ
يُرَوَّونَquench the thirst of العُفاةَthe supplicants بِكُلِّwith every غَمرِflood of bounty
يُرَوَّونَ العُفاةَ بِكُلِّ غَمرِ
And indeed, in al-Ghamr there once were people
By wine some men were deluded indeed,
Who quenched the supplicants' thirst with every flood of bounty.
Quenching thirst again and again with each goblet.
تَفَرَّقَfall apart أَيُّهاO الجِسمُthe body المُعَنّىtormented
تَفَرَّقَ أَيُّها الجِسمُ المُعَنّى
فَجَمعُكَfor your gathered form لِلحَوادِثِfor calamities باتَhas come to يَمريdraws forth
فَجَمعُكَ لِلحَوادِثِ باتَ يَمري
Fall apart, O tormented body,
Oh flesh, you who know, you're torn asunder!
For your gathered form now draws calamities forth.
To gather you against misfortunes is in vain.
وَجَدتُI found بِخَيبَرَin Khaybar الحِمّىfever كَثيراًin abundance
وَجَدتُ بِخَيبَرَ الحِمّى كَثيراً
وَلَمand did not توسِعكَprovide you abundantly مِنof رُطَبٍfresh ripe dates وَتَمرِand dried dates
وَلَم توسِعكَ مِن رُطَبٍ وَتَمرِ
I found fever plentiful in Khaybar,
In Khaybar I found fever aplenty,
Yet it did not lavish you with fresh or dried dates.
But no soft dates nor raisins to appease my thirst.
وَماand never عاشَرتَyou kept company with فيin الدُنِّياthis world خَليلاًa close friend
وَما عاشَرتَ في الدُنِّيا خَليلاً
يُريكَshows you مَوَدَّةًaffection إِلّاexcept لِقَمَرِto cheat
يُريكَ مَوَدَّةً إِلّا لِقَمَرِ
And no friend you kept company with in this world
In life you've known no true friend
Showed you affection except to cheat you.
Who shows you love, save for his own benefit.
