    Syria is not the sultan's unless one sees

    the nomads' herds like fleeing ostriches,

    مِثلَ المُدامَةِ لا تَحِلُّ لِوارِدِ

    and its fresh water becomes, for the desert dwellers,

    like wine, forbidden to anyone coming to drink;

    and their haircloth tents remain

    like stray lines of verse across the lands.

    And a king rises among humankind as though he were

    an angel tormenting the wicked rebel,

    skilled with both hands at killing every dissenter

    by the sword—each struck with cold iron.

    They said, “A just imam will rule us,

    striking our enemies in the lungs with a piercing arrow.”

    ما أَسمَحَت بِسُرورِ يَومٍ فَارِدِ

    And the earth is home to violent passion and grudges;

    it has not granted the joy of a single day,

    even were there in it an overseer like Jupiter,

    bestowing good fortune, and a scribe like Mercury.
