بَعضُsome الرِجالِmen كَقَبرِlike the grave of المَيِتِthe dead man تَمنَحُهُyou give it
أَعَزَّthe most precious شَيءٍthing وَلاand not يُعطيكَit gives you تَعويضاrecompense
Some men are like a dead man's grave: you give it
the most precious thing, and it gives you no recompense.
وَالسَمحُand the generous man فيin العُدمِpoverty مِثلُlike الصَخرِrock فيin دَيمٍsteady rains
يَخضَرُّit turns green شَيئاًa little وَلاand not يَسطيعُit can تَرويضاforming a meadow
And the generous man in poverty is like rock in steady rains:
it turns a little green, but cannot become a meadow.

Strike tents pitched in this world, for within it
are dispositions that compel a noble man to strike camp.
وَخُذand take لِنَفسِكَfor yourself مِنfrom عُمرٍa lifetime تُضَيِّعُهُyou squander it

And take for yourself, from a lifetime you squander,
a portion, and never leave your affairs to others' discretion.

A date palm upon the land has favored you, feeding you ripe fruit;
so make a watering basin for it, rather than for other people's palms.
