Restrain your tears over parting, and seek

tears that bring blessings, like the ascetic’s tears.

For with a drop of them, Hell is quenched,

so it is said—an account from one who has not witnessed it.

Fear your God, and beware of a people

who have not donned, in religion, a striver’s robe.

They ate and consumed all, then sang and grew ecstatic

in their dancing, and took pleasure in the beautiful youth.

The ways of humankind have changed: many a Muslim

has come to seek intercession through a non-Muslim under covenant.

And it is Time that has judged without fairness

among mortals, and the striver’s toil has been wasted.

The young man kept vigil for goals he did not attain,

yet one who spent the night without keeping vigil attained them.
