Religion is a young man's forsaking pleasures while prosperous,

In health and with the power to enjoy them, for as long as he lives.

And forbearance is a powerful man's patience toward one who wrongs him,

Until people say, "He has been humbled or bested."

And the novice enters the sea's depths, thinking them

Shallow water; then we find him already submerged.

And the gazelle is braver than a lion and than a leopard,

When it draws near to vie with the lion and the leopard.

And among the hardships of the nights is a resentful servant:

If given an order, he does something other than what he was commanded.
