إِذاwhen نَفَقَتfound buyers هَذيthese العُروضُthe wares الكَواسِدُunsalable
Poetry deserves to go unsold in every place,
When these unsalable wares find buyers.
عُفاةُseekers of bounty القَوافيrhymes كَالَّذيlike 'who' (a relative pronoun) وَلُماتِهاand its counterparts
إِذاif هُنَّthey (feminine) لَمnot يوصَلنَare connected or granted bounty فَاللَفظُthen the wording فاسِدُfaulty
Those seeking bounty through rhyme are like 'who' and its fellow pronouns:
If they are not connected—or granted bounty—the wording is faulty.
وَمَنand whoever عاشَlived بَينَamong الناسِpeople لَمdid not يَخلُremain free مِنfrom أَذاًharm
بِماthrough what قالَsaid واشٍa slanderer أَوor تَكَلَّمَspoke حاسِدُan envious person
And whoever lives among people is never free from harm,
Through what a slanderer says or an envious person utters.
وَلَيسَand is not جِسادٌsaffron dye فيon تَرائِبِbones of the upper chest كاعِبٍa maiden with budding breasts
كَأَحمَرَlike red blood مِنهُwith it مَضرَبُstriking edge السَيفِthe sword جاسِدُencrusted with dried blood
Nor is saffron dye on a budding maiden's chest
Like the red blood caked on the sword's striking edge.
