    تَشِذُّ وَتَنأى عَنهُمُ القُرَباءُ

    People of merit are strangers in their homelands;

their kin turn aside and keep far from them.

For they have bought no dark-red wine for pleasure,

nor have they taken bashful maidens captive.

It is humiliation enough in life for a young man

that he returns with the barest sustenance—and that a gift.

When the fire of youth dies down, it grieves me,

even if a tent were pitched for me among the stars.

I repay you with interest for the affection you have bestowed,

so I double it, if interest does you any good.

There is no childhood after fifteen years have passed,

    nor youthful passion after forty.

Do you truly reject the woolen cloak as clothing?

Yet if what you weave were visible, it would be called coarse cloth.

    فَمِنها عَلَندى ساطِعٌ وَكِباءُ

    And this motionless earth has places of growth;

among them are towering ‘alandā trees and incense wood.

The cord of descent stretches unbroken between Adam

and me, yet no bāʾ has been joined to my lām.

    Amr yawned when Khalid yawned,

by contagion; yet yawning has not infected me.

Knowing people has made me turn away from them,

as has knowing that the worlds are dust.

And how can I recover what is lost, after

the reeds have wrapped themselves in the blaze's flames?

When fate descends, the sandgrouse have no

power to take flight, nor secluded women any power to resist.

And Radwa has been rammed by an army, yet took no heed,

and Quba was hemmed in by the host's banners.

A father wrongs his children, even if they

are governors of their cities and orators.

And what has estranged you further from your sons, and increased their

resentment toward you, is that they are gifted.

They see a father who cast them into a tightly bound

knot, whose untying has eluded the wise.

And none has invited the peoples in every town

to falsehood but a company of men of letters.

We are pursued through every mountain pass and cleft

by deaths whose leaders are of their own kind.

    If hungry lions fear sword-edges,

then how can gazelles escape their rule?
