People follow the earth: when it is miserly,

they are miserly; and if it is generous once, so are they.

People vie in boasting of glory, while reason declares

that in these generations there are no noble people.

And sovereignty is God's, and the world has its reversals:

good and evil, destitution and prosperity.

And people are diverse; no common aim has united them:

setting out and settling down, going to Tihamah and to Najd.

O night, two opposites: some, wakeful in the darkness,

keep vigil through you, while others sleep within you.

Help your brother in a good deed he intends to do,

for believers are stalwart helpers in good works.
