Our lifespans have come like the verses of our Book:

Some long and lived out in full, and others short.

And the soul, amid its hopes, is like hunted prey,

Among predators, with none to defend it.

And among men is one ill-fated in his religion,

And eyes are averted from the decrees of fate.

He prayed and shortened his prayer, though he was not traveling,

Performing dry ablution, though his abode was in the cities.

He foolishly paid the obligatory alms to a rich man,

And set out on pilgrimage, but a hindrance turned him back.

    ثُمَّ اِنتَبَهتُ فَعادَني إِقصارُ

    Indeed, I slept and swam in the deep waters of wishes;

Then I awoke, and restraint returned to me.

If you own a garden on a hill,

Then beware lest a whirlwind strike it.
