وارَحمَتاOh, pity! لِلأَنامِfor humankind كُلِّهِمُall of them
فَإِنَّهُمfor indeed they مِنthrough هَوىlove of الحَياةِlife أُتواwere undone
Oh, pity for all humankind!
Have mercy and compassion for all people
For through their love of life they have been undone.
For they are driven by the desire for life
أُفٍّFie! لَهُمupon them ماhow أَقَلَّlittle فِطنَتَهُمtheir discernment
لَذّواthey relished أَكيلاًfood وَإِنَّماyet only سُئِتواthey were choked
Fie upon them! How little discernment they have!
Woe to them, how little is their insight
They relished food, yet were only being choked.
They relished food, yet were only made wretched
غَنّواthey sang مِنout of الجَهلِignorance فيin مَحافِلِهِمtheir gatherings
وَلَوand if دَرَواthey knew ماwhat تَحَمَّلواthey bore نَأَتواthey would have groaned
They sang out of ignorance in their gatherings.
They sang in ignorance at their gatherings
And had they known what they bore, they would have groaned.
If only they knew what they endured, they would refrain
