O you who admonish me through silence, why do you not

impart to me your delightful speech?

    Indeed, the ever-renewed pair—day and night—who are

two champion racers have outstripped me, yet were never outstripped.

They are like two archers whose arrows have become

    neither feathered nor featherless.

And it is as though the hours had wings,

so I imagine them with those wings as short-tailed sandgrouse.

Fate calls to death from close at hand:

“Leave this one until the appointed time, or take this one.”

The whiteness of dawn has made my hope sprout,

yet yesterday I had found it cut down.

Leave joy to whoever is exalted by it,

and worship your God, alone and solitary.
