أَيَّتُهاO النَفسُsoul لاdo not تُهاليbe alarmed
شَرخيmy youth قَدalready مَرَّhas passed وَاِكتِهاليand my middle age
O soul, do not be alarmed.
O soul, do not beguile me,
My youth and my middle age have passed.
My youth has passed, so compose yourself,
لَمnot يَبقَremain إِلّاexcept شَفاًa remnant يَسيرٌslight
قَرَّبَhas brought close مِنto مَورِديmy watering place نِهاليmy thirsty herd
Only a slight remnant remains;
Little remains except a small measure,
it has brought my thirsty herd close to my watering place.
My end is drawing near.
وَاِبتَهَلَand strove earnestly الدَهرُTime فيin أَذاتيhurting me
وَكانَand was فيin الباطِلِfutility اِبتِهاليmy earnest pleading
And Time has striven earnestly to hurt me,
Fate has worn me down,
while my earnest pleading was in vain.
And in vain was my struggle.
وَأُمُّand Umm (Mother) دَفرٍDafr (Stench; together, the world's epithet) فَتاةُa maiden سوءٍevil

And Umm Dafr is a wicked maiden;
The mother of misfortunes is an evil girl
she hides me in heaped-up earth,
Who buries me in a forgotten grave,
مُرسِلَةًsending forth غارَةًa raid بِخَيلٍwith horses
قَدalready غَنِيَتhave no need عَنof هَبٍ'Hab!' (an urging cry) وَهالِand 'Hāl!' (an urging cry)
sending forth a raid with horses
Sending a raid with horses
that need no urging cries of 'Hab!' or 'Hāl!'
That have no need of gift or beseeching.
وَجَدتُI found حُبّيmy love لَهاfor her قَديماًlong-standing
وَقَدand indeed تَبَيَّنتُI clearly perceived مَقتَهاher hatred ليfor me
I have found my love for her long-standing,
Long ago I found her love,
though I have plainly seen her hatred for me.
And now her hatred of me is clear.
