يا راعِيَ المُصرِ ما سَوَّمتَ في دَعَةٍ

يا راعِيَ المُصرِ ما سَوَّمتَ في دَعَةٍ

وَعِرسُكَ الشاةُ فَاِحذَر جارَكَ الذيبا

وَعِرسُكَ الشاةُ فَاِحذَر جارَكَ الذيبا

O shepherd of the city, you have not let your flock graze in peace.

And your wife is the ewe, so beware your neighbor, the wolf.

تَرومُ تَهذيبَ هَذا الخَلقُ مِن دَنَسٍ

تَرومُ تَهذيبَ هَذا الخَلقُ مِن دَنَسٍ

وَاللَهُ ما شاءَ لِلأَقوامِ تَهذيبا

وَاللَهُ ما شاءَ لِلأَقوامِ تَهذيبا

You seek to purify these people of defilement,

Yet God has not willed purification for the peoples.

وَما رَوِيتَ بِعَذبٍ حَلَّ في قُلُبٍ

وَما رَوِيتَ بِعَذبٍ حَلَّ في قُلُبٍ

حَتّى تَكَلَّفتَ إِعناتاً وَتَعذيبا

حَتّى تَكَلَّفتَ إِعناتاً وَتَعذيبا

Nor did you drink your fill of sweet water lying in wells

Until you burdened yourself with hardship and torment.

فَاِعرِف لِصادِقِكَ الأَنباءَ مَوضِعَهُ

فَاِعرِف لِصادِقِكَ الأَنباءَ مَوضِعَهُ

واجِزِ الكَذوبَ عَلى ما قالَ تَكذيبا

واجِزِ الكَذوبَ عَلى ما قالَ تَكذيبا

So acknowledge the proper standing of one who tells you true news,

And repay the habitual liar for what he said by declaring it false.
