ياO خاطِريmy mind لاdo not تَوَجَّهturn وَجهَtoward سَيِّئَةٍan evil deed
فَأَفكِرِso think الآنَnow أَقصىthe furthest reach الفِكرِof thought وَاِرتَجِلِand improvise
O my mind, do not turn toward an evil deed;
so think now to the furthest reach of thought, and improvise.
وَياand O بَنانِيَmy fingers لاdo not تُبسَطbe outstretched لِعارِفَةٍfor a favor
وَياand O لِسانيmy tongue بِغَيرِwith anything other than الصِدقِtruth لاdo not تَجُلroam
And O my fingers, do not be outstretched for a favor;
and O my tongue, do not roam beyond the truth.
أَوجالُfears نَفسِيَof my soul فيin الأولىthe first life مَضاعَفَةٌredoubled
وَلاand not أَزالُI cease مِنَof الأُخرىthe next life عَلىin a state of وَجَلِfear
My soul's fears in this first life are redoubled,
and I remain in dread of the next life.
وَالشَرُّand evil فيin الخَلقِcreation طَبعٌan innate disposition لاdoes not يُزايِلُهُleave it
فَقِسso compare عَلىto خَزَرٍnarrowness فيin العَينِthe eye أَوor نَجَلِwide-eyedness
And evil is innate in creation and never leaves it;
so liken it to an eye's narrowness or breadth.
لَوif وُفِّقَwere rightly guided المَرءُa man لَمwould not يَبهَشreach eagerly إِلىtoward اِمرَأَةٍa woman

Had a man been rightly guided, he would not reach eagerly toward a woman,
nor would an innocent maiden be led as bride to a man.
أَوor عُمِّرَwere granted long life الشَيخُthe old man عُمرَthe lifespan of النَسرِthe Eagle مِنamong شُهُبٍbright stars
لاnot مِنamong ذَواتِthose possessing جَناحٍwings لَمwould not يَقُلsay بَجَلِenough
Or were an old man granted the lifespan of the Eagle among the stars—
not among those with wings—he would not say, 'Enough.'
قَدmay يَسأَمُgrow weary الحَيُّthe living person وَالأَسرارُand inward thoughts ماnot خَلُصَتhave been sincere

The living may grow weary, yet inward thoughts are not sincere
in their love of death, among the straight-haired and the wavy-haired.
أَولىmost deserving البَرِيَّةِof creatures أَنto يَحظىbe favored بِعاقِبَةٍwith a good outcome
مَنwhoever لَمhas not يَرُحgone away مِنfrom قَبيحٍa vile deed بادِيَshowing الخَجَلِshame
Most deserving among creatures of being granted a good end
is one who has not come away from a vile deed visibly ashamed.
وَالصَمتُand silence أَحجىwiser وَأَحرارُand noble expressions of الكَلامِspeech لَهاbelonging to them
فَضلٌmerit وَفيهِand in it نَظيرُa counterpart of النُسوَةِthe women الهُجُلِwanton
And silence is wiser; noble words have
merit, yet speech also contains the counterpart of wanton women.
إِنَّindeed اللَطيفَينِthe two subtle entities مِنnamely دَهرٍtime وَأَمكِنَةٍand places
لاnot يَفتَآنِthey cease بِلاwithout حِسٍّa sound وَلاand no زَجَلِclamor
Indeed, the two subtle entities—time and space—
remain forever without a sound or clamor.

If my removal from this world is to lead to
something better and more spacious, then take me away swiftly.
وَإِنand if عَلِمتَyou know مَآليmy final destination عِندَat آخِرَتيmy afterlife

And if you know my final destination in the hereafter
to be worse and narrower, then, my Lord, prolong my allotted span.
