O long-bodied camel, away from whoever journeyed by night, sent forth for God,
I roamed in the wide world seeking God’s grace,
a stout-cheeked she-camel, long-bodied under saddle or at pasture,
In the valleys or on the plateaus roaming far and wide.
فيon لاحِبٍa clear, well-trodden road لاnot يَعودُreturn السالِكونَthe travelers بِهِalong it
مِثلَlike اِبنِthe son of الأَبرَصِal-Abras لَمّاwhen عادَbecame مَلحوباslain
on a clear, well-trodden road whose travelers do not return,
On a path where wayfarers never returned,
like Ibn al-Abras when he ended up slain.
Like the leper’s son when he came back recovered.
أَمّاas for الأَنامُhumankind فَقَدthen indeed صاحَبتُهُمI kept their company زَمَناًfor a time
فَماso not رَضيتُI accepted مِنَamong الخِلّانِthe friends مَصحوباa companion
As for humankind, I have indeed kept their company for a time,
As for people, I kept their company for a time,
but among friends I accepted none as a companion.
But found no loyal friends among the faithless.
لاdo not تَغشَهُمvisit them كَوُلوجِlike the entry of الهَمِّsorrow يَطرُقُهُمit assails them
بِالكُرهِagainst their will بَلbut rather مِثلَlike وَسقِa load of الخَيرِgoodness مَصحوباbrought along
Do not visit them like sorrow entering and assailing them
Do not let their problems weigh heavy on you,
against their will, but like a load of goodness brought along.
Rather be like a raincloud, graced with goodness.
