O God of humankind and Lord of the clouds,

Poverty is ours, not Yours, and sovereignty is Yours.

When I do not live in delight,

I grieve, and the firmament closes in upon me.

    وَلَكِن أَوَدُّ لِقاءَ المَلَك

    And, unlike Moses, I do not fear death;

But I long to meet the angel.

The life of mortals is a path to extinction,

And my temple-lock did not whiten until it grew black.

    When a boy's family rejoices

over him, that rejoicing is, in essence, ruin.

Have you two not seen that the thread of time

has destroyed al-Sulayk and destroyed the partridge chick?
